WATERFORD GREENWAY

What is the Waterford Greenway?
The Waterford Greenway is a walking and cycle route built on the disused Waterford to Dungarvan Railway, which was originally constructed in the 1870’s and ceased use in the 1960’s. You will ride through history, from the Viking and Norman sites to the War of Independence. On the Greenway you can view it all. You will use some stunning pieces of civil engineering, tall viaducts, curved viaducts, tunnels and bridges (including a purpose built, double level, cow bridge). You will see the natural wonders of a meandering river bank, mountain views and the spectacular Waterford coast line.

“It was one of those happy-go-lucky days cycling on the Greenway stretching far when the least expected thing in the least expected moment happened: a resting bike got a puncture! Being ill-equipped with only a basic repair kit and no tube, we were lucky we were rescued from the predicament of walking back home by Wild Rover. A quick and efficient fix saved our day and we could cycle away!”

“Declan joined us on our “first fundraising cycle” for Waterford Educate Together National School on Saturday the 23rd. His invaluable experience paired with his easy going demeanor made for an enjoyable no stress cycling event. I highly recommend him and hope he will join us in future events.”

“Declan is a real gent, and just the man to get you back rolling if you get a mechanical while biking the Greenway. Stick the number in your phone – who knows when you’d need it ;-)”

All those years ago when the Waterford Sports Partnership asked me did I want to go an a course to become a Ride Leader for Cycling Ireland I didn't think it would lead to this. Cycling with the team from AXA Community Bike Rides, AND a Tokyo gold medalist Eve Mc Crystal, but not only that ....... she let me hold the medals 😲 ... See MoreSee Less

As someone that set up a company to fix bicycle punctures, I shouldn't be this excited when someone gets a puncture but ..... Holy Mother of Pearl took at that 😲The tyre was punctured by sea shells left on The Causeway by birds following their breakfast. But I have 5mm puncture protection on my tyres! That's fine until you meet an 8mm piece of shell 🙃Most punctures on the Waterford Greenway are caused by tyres not been checked before you leave, followed by a thorn or two, ... See MoreSee Less

Today's ride for AXA Community Bike Rides took us as far as The Ambush on the Waterford Greenway, where we even had time to chat with The Greenway Man. The cross has marked the spot where Jack Cummins was shot one hundred years ago. To mark his centenary, a plaque has been mounted to a stone taken from his farm. ... See MoreSee Less
